Three Fingered Jack is the somewhat disreputable uncle
of the stratovolcanoes of the High Cascades. It is extinct and thus
eroded more than the other still active (dormant) volcanoes to the
north and south.
At 7841 feet, it is also somewhat lower than its neighbors, but it
still dominates its part of the skyline from the Doug.
According to Lewis McArthur, in Oregon Geographic Names (6th
Edition), Three Fingered Jack has had at least as many non-Native
names as fingers. The first recorded American to name it called it
Mount Marion. Later it was named after a three fingered trapper who
lived nearby, named Jack. Judge John Waldo tried to change its name
to Trident Peak, but this did not work, and it remained Three
Fingered Jack. |
